The Truth About Marketing Online

“Can I make money online?” I am asked this question almost daily. The answer is simply, yes, if you understand the difference between Revenue Generating and Reputation Marketing. Most small business owners confuse the concept of advertising, marketing and sales. Not all are meant to generate an income.

MARKETING

For example, I optimize and run Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaigns for 10 different clients. I have one client who runs marketing campaigns. I consistently win 1 – 5 new top Search Engine Position Results (SERPs) for my clients each month. Even though I can successfully get clients to the top of the search engines, they complain because they are not selling.

Asking a marketer to take responsibility for sales is not logical. The same applies to advertising campaigns. Take a look at a company I work with ADAIDM. They have a website made to ‘sell.’ Their customer service is easy to access. Their message is clear. And, this company is very successful.

ADA Intelligent Dental Marketing helps local dental offices market their services. However, they are not responsible for the sales. Marketing companies have no control over how their clients treat customers, whether they respond to queries in a timely fashion, or if they offer good service.

So, why market? The answer is simple. Without marketing, you will not have the exposure needed to sustain business growth and improve profits. Marketing builds an image – a brand – for your business that people recognize. Good marketing creates exposure in the same places where your customers surf the net. Marketing also helps companies identify their potential clients, untapped markets, and build a strong reputation.

ADVERTISING

Advertising puts your message in-front of buyers. If it is the right message then the company’s sales will increase. However, the product must be in demand. No one buys SEO, or logos, or web design. All the companies that sell offer something else to their clients – they add value.

The biggest advertising mistake is to promote a product or service. Do not sell yourself or your product. Instead, sell something that the client cannot get elsewhere.
The ad should never ask for a sale. Instead, it should hook the buyer and convince them to keep reading.

REVENUE GENERATING

Making money is a completely new ball game. One of the first ways to separate people from their money is to avoid asking for money. Let them use credit. Many people are more comfortable increasing their debt than they are decreasing their net-worth.

Asking for the money requires a delicate balance of several factors which may have nothing to do with the product or service being sold:

• Buyer remorse
• Value
• Communication styles
• Behavioral motivation
• Personality types
• Market saturation
• Intrusion value
• Perceived value
• Social significance of the product
• Problem solving benefits
• Its ability to open up opportunities
• Emotional/impulse value

When we build revenue generating landing pages for clients, we often touch on the emotions of the consumer, and the fundamental needs of the website owner. Consider two examples.

Website 1 does not focus on the product, but on the benefits. The first landing page uses education give potential buyers a reason to keep clicking links. The second one offers solutions for potential advertisers, highlighting potential problems and reminding potential customers why they need to buy. Neither page asks for the sale but offers to answer questions, include more information, and give away something free.

Website 2 focuses on the sale. The consumer is ignored, as if they are the least important element in the sales cycle. The website totes the virtues of the product, the company’s successes, and even the talents of the web designer.

Asking for the sale is a common ‘real world’ tactic, but it does not work well on the net. It is impossible to refute excuses not to buy, so eCommerce businesses need to develop new strategies. Once an eCommerce business owner, freelance professional or small business entrepreneur understands the purpose of the sales cycle … Marketing, Advertising, and Sale … they are ready to start making money.

Discovering Keywords

Discovering keywords should focus on identifying as many keywords that are related to your web site and target market as possible. You should create about 20 primary keywords that are tightly targeted on your business.

A good idea would be making a list of initial keywords. Think of the keywords that people would type in search engines to find your web site. Write them all down. You should make a list of about 20 initial keywords that perfectly represent the theme of your site. If you're lack of ideas go to your competitors' sites and look at the keywords they're targeting.

Another option is to use free Google's service - Google Adwords Keyword Tool. This free tool can help you get ideas for your new keywords. It was designed to improve your ad relevance when running an Adwords campaign, but it can certainly help you in this keyword research process by giving some variations of the keywords you enter.

In Conclusion

Keyword research is integral and extremely important part of your overall search engine optimization process. It determines the success and failure of your internet business.

  • Target the wrong keywords and you're doomed. You won't receive relevant traffic or you will receive no traffic at all.
  • Target the right keywords and you'll get tons of quality prospects who will buy your products, services or anything else you have to offer.

Remember that a thorough keyword research will not only help you to bring targeted traffic to your web site and increase your sales tremendously. It will also help your visitors and search engines. Your prospects will appreciate you for providing the information they were looking for. Search engines, in turn, will reward you with high rankings for providing quality and useful information to the surfers.

Keyword Usage

If you have done your competition analysis and have selected your final keywords, it's time to use them on your web pages. A good idea would be using no more than 3 or 4 keywords per web page. This way ensures that you're targeting more specific theme and it will be easier to rank higher for those keywords.

You should include your selected keywords in these areas of your web pages:

  • Title Tag
Your title should contain no more than 60 characters and keyword density should be about 30%.

  • Meta Description Tag
Should contain less than 30 words. You should use your main keyword once or twice in description tag.

  • Meta Keyword Tag
Should contain less than 140 characters. Repeat your keywords here 2 or 3 times maximum.

  • Headlines
Use your main keywords in the headlines of your web pages. It will help people determine what your page is about and help you rank better.

  • Title Attributes
These are part of the hyperlink and tell people what the landing web page is about. Be sure to include your keywords there too.

  • Anchor Text
Anchor text are the words that you see in the hyperlink. Search engines give some weight on anchor text. You should include the keywords of a landing page in anchor text.

  • File Names
Include your important keywords in file names as well. For example "your-keyword.html" or "three-main-keywords.php".

You should use your main keywords more often at the top and bottom, of your web page. But be careful and do not over-optimize your pages, because search engines may consider this as spam and ban your site for a long time. Make sure that the text is still readable.

Less Competitive Keywords

When you are choosing your keywords, using Overture or Wordtracker, try to select more specific ones. Try to start with basic keywords and then narrow your terms to those, which contain more words. Studies have shown that people are becoming smarter and they search for one or two word phrases more seldom. Savvy surfers use more complex (3, 4 or 5) word phrases in their searches.

Therefore, you should select more targeted keywords and keyphrases. Let's say you have a SEO company. So you should start with the keywords like these:

  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Search Engine Optimization Company
  • Web Site Search Engine Optimization Company

The first keyphrase is very basic. It will probably have a lot of competition on search engines, so you should select latter ones, which not only have less competition on search engines, but also will produce better conversion rates. The more specific phrases you choose the more targeted visitors you'll get. That means that visitors will be more likely to buy your products or services.

Your location also matters when you are doing keyword research. Assuming that you have a SEO company as in the example above, you should use the name of your location in your main keywords (country, state, city or region). For example:

  • Search Engine Optimization Canada
  • California Search Engine Optimization Company

This can be very important, especially if you sell products or services locally. You should check if people are searching for your keywords in the area where your company is located and use those keywords in your website.

What is an Effective Internet Marketing Strategy?

If you’re still struggling to finally reach your financial independence & make a nice living from your home, then listen... The only reason why you’re failing is because you don’t have a good website marketing strategy.

If you ask any successful offline world entrepreneur how it’s possible to build a great business without a proper strategy, he’ll start laughing. But many internet marketers are trying to make money without even realizing what on earth they’re doing online…

If you believe that you can jump in, create a website, submit it to a few directories or blogs, sit down, relax & watch those thousands of dollars (that you’ve seen in many marketers’ checks) to come, then you need to stop right there. It ain’t gonna happen. You need to think: who you are and where do you want to be in the future. Whether offline or online, there are only two things that matter: “Buying” and “Selling”. Basically, to simplify, it all comes down to this:

  • Who is your customer?
What is he or she specifically looking for? You must know their problems or desires. You must be in their shoes and find out what is that would make them feel better (an offer).

  • What is your offer?
Why should they buy from you? How come you’re better than the rest? Why should they trust you? Are you offering your own or someone else’s product? How will you create an irresistible offer so they beg you to sell it to them?

Think about it… There are millions of people buying online every single day. If they’re not buying from you then whose fault is that - theirs or yours?

Before you even start creating internet marketing strategy for your website(s), you need to do a research. That’s where it all begins actually. Just like in any business, you have to understand where you are and what can you do.

#1 Phase - Online Research

In this phase, you must research your market. Who are your main competitors? What are they doing online? PPC, SEO, press releases, develop their own products, do affiliate marketing or Adsense? What are their weaknesses? Do they offer a guarantee? Is their product really good? Do they build links constantly or not?

Who is your favourite customer? Where do they hangout: MySpace or YouTube? Are they freebie seekers or desperate buyers? What forces them to buy one or another product? Read reviews, forums, testimonials to find out as much as you can about your target market.

#2 Phase – Data Analysis

If you’ve performed a thorough online market research, it’s time to systematize the data you have. Write down what are the main strengths and weaknesses of your competitors. Maybe you have more time than your competitors? Or maybe you know some targeted traffic source that others don’t. How might this affect your business?

Which are the places your target market usually visits? What are their main concerns? Maybe they’re not satisfied with the products in the market. Can offer something better, maybe in a form of a bonus? After that, you come to the next step, which is developing your internet marketing strategy.

#3 Phase – Strategy Development

When you already know your target market and your competitors, you are able to start creating your internet marketing strategy (or strategies). Just sit down and think about: who you are and what you can offer to the target market.

It involves a little bit of planning. What marketing methods you’ll use and which ones you can afford? PPC, SEO, email, blogging, podcasting, video blogging, webinars, viral traffic generation, link building, banner exchange or others…? You must prioritize your web marketing tactics. Find out what’s going to bring you positive ROI in the shortest time possible.

Do you have enough time to perform search engine optimization? If so, then sit and do everything you can, day in day out, to rank at the top in search engines. Don’t have time? Then buy PPC traffic and start testing your landing pages effectively. Or buy resell rights to products and sell them on ClickBank with the help of JV partners.

Don’t have time AND money? Then you better get one or another, otherwise you’re dead.

Seriously, you must find ways to get time or money. You need to think about how you can exploit other people’s time and money to build your own web business. That’s what rich people do and that’s what you must do if you want to survive in this competitive world.

#4 Phase – Monitoring Performance

When you have an internet marketing plan, you can start implementing it right away. The last step is to start monitoring your internet marketing campaigns. Which keywords people typed into search engines to find your site? Which keywords brought you the most money in PPC marketing? Are you satisfied with your SEO rankings or not? Do majority of your visitors leave your site without even spending 30 seconds? And so on…

Only with the help of close monitoring you can discover what works and what doesn’t. Testing landing pages, testing Adwords ads against each other (A/B split testing) can show you some amazing results. And remember – you never know for sure until you TEST it!

There is no formula for an effective Internet marketing strategy. It depends on your individual situation. When you realize your strengths and weaknesses, you’ll be able to come up with a great marketing plan. No matter if you’re thinking about Adsense site, affiliate site or your own product. When you find out what you’re able to accomplish with your resources at the moment, you can create a great web marketing strategy for your online business and finally breakthrough on the internet.
